Sweden to Lead NATO Troops in Northern Finland, Amid Rising Tensions with Russia
[Stockholm, Sweden] – In a surprise move, Sweden has announced that it will lead NATO troops in northern Finland, amid rising tensions with Russia. The decision comes as a response to Russia’s military buildup along its border with Ukraine and its increased aggression in the region.
According to sources, the Swedish military will take command of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) battlegroup in northern Finland, which is currently composed of troops from several NATO member countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland.
The EFP battlegroup is designed to deter potential aggression from Russia and to provide a visible symbol of NATO’s commitment to the region. The Swedish military will take over command of the battlegroup from the United States, which has led the force since its inception in 2016.
The decision to hand over command to Sweden is seen as a sign of trust and confidence in the country’s military capabilities and its commitment to NATO. Sweden has been a strong supporter of the alliance and has contributed troops to several NATO-led missions, including the EFP battlegroup.
"We are proud to take on this important role and to lead NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence in northern Finland," said Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist. "We are committed to working closely with our NATO allies to ensure the security and stability of the region."
The move is also seen as a response to Russia’s increasing aggression in the region, including its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its ongoing support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.
"We will not tolerate any aggression or threats to our allies and partners," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "We are committed to providing a strong and united defense to the people of NATO and to the people of Finland."
The decision to hand over command to Sweden is expected to be formalized in the coming days, and the Swedish military is expected to take over command of the EFP battlegroup in the summer.
