Israel’s Siege Now Blocks 83% of Food Aid Reaching Gaza, New Data Reveals
[September 2024] – A shocking new report has revealed that Israel’s ongoing blockade of Gaza has blocked an alarming 83% of food aid from reaching the besieged territory, sparking widespread concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the severe restrictions on the entry of goods and materials into Gaza have resulted in a devastating shortage of basic necessities, including food, medicine, and fuel.
The data, which was obtained through a Freedom of Information request, shows that only 17% of the food aid intended for Gaza has been able to enter the territory since the beginning of the year, leaving thousands of Palestinians struggling to access even the most basic sustenance.
"The humanitarian situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly dire," said a spokesperson for the UN OCHA. "The lack of access to food and other essential supplies is having a devastating impact on the well-being of civilians, particularly children, women, and the elderly."
The blockade, which was imposed by Israel in 2007, has been widely criticized by human rights organizations and international leaders as a form of collective punishment against the Palestinian population.
"We are deeply concerned about the impact of the blockade on the people of Gaza," said a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). "The lack of access to basic necessities is not only a humanitarian crisis, but also a grave violation of international law."
The situation in Gaza is particularly dire, with an estimated 70% of the population reliant on international aid to survive. The blockade has also led to widespread unemployment, poverty, and a lack of access to basic services, including healthcare and education.
As the humanitarian crisis continues to unfold, international pressure is mounting on Israel to lift the blockade and allow much-needed aid to reach the people of Gaza.
