US Nuclear Repository Among Federally-Owned Spots Identified for Renewable Energy Projects

[Update: 12:05 PM ET]

In a major move towards a more sustainable future, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) has revealed a list of federally-owned sites identified for renewable energy projects, including a prominent nuclear repository.

According to sources within the DOE, the sites have been earmarked for the development of wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal projects, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote cleaner energy.

The list, which includes the Nevada Test Site and the Idaho National Laboratory, also features other sites managed by the Energy Department’s Office of Environment, Health, and Safety.

"The identification of these sites will help accelerate the development of renewable energy on federal lands, supporting a clean energy future and aligning with the Biden-Harris administration’s climate agenda," said a DOE official.

Among the notable projects is the proposed development of a large-scale solar panel array at the Nevada Test Site, which could have the potential to generate hundreds of megawatts of electricity.

The Idaho National Laboratory, meanwhile, will be host to a innovative geothermal project, featuring a revolutionary new technology aimed at enhancing the efficiency and scalability of geothermal power generation.

The DOE official emphasized that the selection process was guided by a series of rigorous criteria, prioritizing sites with suitable climate conditions, existing infrastructure, and access to transmission systems.

While the announcement represents a significant step forward, environmental advocates have expressed caution, urging the DOE to ensure the projects are done in an environmentally responsible and transparent manner.

RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS ON FEDERALLY-OWNED SITES

  1. Nevada Test Site (Nevada) – Large-scale solar panel array
  2. Idaho National Laboratory (Idaho) – Geothermal project
  3. Savannah River Site (South Carolina) – Wind and solar projects
  4. Hanford Site (Washington) – Hydroelectric and wind power projects
  5. Los Alamos National Laboratory (New Mexico) – Solar and wind projects
  6. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Tennessee) – Solar and biomass projects
  7. Argonne National Laboratory (Illinois) – Biofuels and bioproducts projects
