Japan Grapples with Severe Heatwave as 4,157 People Rushed to Hospitals with Heatstroke in Just One Week
Tokyo, Japan – September 19, 2024 – In a stark reminder of the devastating effects of climate change, Japan has been hit with a severe heatwave that has left a trail of devastation in its wake. According to the latest reports, a staggering 4,157 people were rushed to hospitals across the country in just one week, all suffering from heatstroke.
The scorching heat, which has been plaguing Japan since the beginning of September, has reached unprecedented levels, with temperatures soaring to as high as 38°C (100.4°F) in some areas. The intense heat has left many people struggling to cope, with the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions being particularly vulnerable.
"We are seeing a surge in heat-related illnesses, and it’s not just a matter of a few people getting sick," said Dr. Taro Yamada, a leading expert in emergency medicine at Tokyo University Hospital. "The heat is so severe that it’s putting a huge strain on our healthcare system, and we’re doing everything we can to treat those affected as quickly and effectively as possible."
The heatwave has also had a significant impact on daily life in Japan, with many people forced to stay indoors to avoid the blistering heat. The country’s transportation system has also been severely disrupted, with many train and subway lines suspended due to the heat.
