In a surprising turn of events, colleges and universities around the world are grappling with the impact of pausing classes on student success. As institutions scramble to adapt to the rapidly changing education landscape, we take a closer look at the current state of affairs and explore the far-reaching consequences.
Pausing Classes: The Unintended Consequences
The decision to pause classes, often done to slow the spread of COVID-19, has thrown many students’ plans into disarray. As campuses go dark, concerns about student success are on the rise. With courses delayed, and in some cases, canceled, many students are left wondering about their future academic prospects.
The Impact on Student Success
According to recent studies, pausing classes can have devastating effects on student success. Research indicates that every week of disrupted education can result in:
- 10% lower grades
- 5% increased dropout rates
- 15% increased risk of student burnout
These statistics paint a stark picture of the unintended consequences of pausing classes. With the stakes higher than ever, institutions must act quickly to mitigate these effects.
The Rise of Online Education
As a solution, online education has emerged as a silver lining. With the widespread adoption of digital learning tools, institutions are now empowered to offer flexible, self-paced learning experiences. By doing so, they can help bridge the gap created by pausing classes, ensuring that students can continue their studies uninterrupted.
Innovative Solutions in Action
Some institutions have taken bold steps to combat the impact of pausing classes. For example, some are:
- Developing interactive, online modules to keep students engaged
- Offering one-on-one tutoring and support services
- Implementing flexible, adaptive assessments to ensure student progress
What’s Next for Higher Education?
As the landscape continues to evolve, it’s clear that institutions must adapt quickly to meet the changing needs of their students. The future of higher education may well rely on a delicate balance of online and offline learning. With the rise of online education, students will demand more flexibility and autonomy, while institutions must ensure that these new solutions do not compromise the traditional learning experience.

so i got some rough news this week and will be needing extensive surgeries in 2025. these will be pretty intense and im left with no choice but to pause for my recovery.
does anyone have experience with the student success team or pausing classes? want to know if there is anything i need to prepare while i wait for a reply.
appreciate the help!
Hello, I’m sorry you’re having to go through this! I recently had to take August off for recovery from surgery. I put a request in and was approved. Talk to your advisor and they can help you out more. I will be praying for you!
It always sucks to have to pause.
Way way back (I old) when I had to take a couple months off due to a death in the family.
I just dropped the current classes I was in and when the classes were offered again I just retook them. I think it was two months later.
It was super easy to arrange, I just had to speak with my student advisor and they took care of everything. This is one of the benefits of the classes being offered every other month
