I was thinking about this as I was watching the news with Israel bombing Hezbollah/Lebanon.
The parts of the middle East that are not American client states have no real deterrence from Israeli/American military force.
Eg. If Israel just bombs Hezbollah and doesn't actually invade how much retaliation could they extract?
I hear about all of the missiles they have, but I somewhat question the effectiveness of stationary launchers when faced with an opponent with overwhelming air superiority.
Eg. How long can they maintain those launchers with Israeli f-16s flying over the launch sites?
Even if they can retaliate significantly against Israel I don't think anybody questions what would happen to Lebanese cities in this scenario. (Utter destruction)
And if they retaliate significantly enough it might even cause Israel to choose to use nuclear weapons.
The same is true for Iran just on a larger scale and that would probably bring in American direct intervention. Eg. American carrier battle groups launching airstrikes directly.
If I'm the Iranian government no matter what the cost I'm developing a nuclear weapon given my opponents. I don't even care if this isolates me from Russia and China at the end of the day if the US starts bombing they probably won't intervene.
(Both Russia and China would struggle to deal with the US within their respective regions (if they win it would require extremely high difficulty) but they basically have no chance in the middle Eastern region)
A nuclear deterrent is basically Iran's best hope to not be bombed.
