India scripted history as it wins Chess Olympiad 2024 in both Open and Women’s sections

In a stunning come-from-behind victory, India has won the highly anticipated Chess Olympiad 2024, clinching the top spot in both the Open and Women’s sections. The Indian national teams, led by chess maestros Gukesh, Arjun, Divya, and Vantika, demonstrated unmatched skill and tenacity throughout the tournament, leaving international opponents in awe.

The Indian Open team, which consisted of GM Vidit, GM R Praggananandhaa, IM Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Gukesh (B1), Arjun (B3), Divya (B3), and Aditya Mittal, displayed remarkable consistency and aggression, outplaying their foes to secure a whopping +8 score in the Final.

In a thrilling finale, the Indian Open team drew with the world’s #2-ranked team, Georgia, to claim the champion’s title, with Aditya Mittal expertly holding a crucial rook and pawn against Russia’s Sergey Karjakin. Gukesh shone bright as the B1 board, while Arjun, Divya, and Vantika impressed in their respective positions.

"The entire team performed exceptionally, and I’m incredibly proud of each one of them," said Coach GM Chiragkumar Hiren. "Gukesh, Arjun, Divya, and Vantika, in particular, showed exceptional skill, adaptability, and mental toughness – qualities that make them Champions."

In the Women’s section, India’s efforts were led by IM Soumya Swaminathan, IM Bhakti Kulkarni, IM Sita S Seshadri, WIM Divya Deshmukh, and IM Padmini Rout. Divya Deshmukh (B4) showcased exceptional form, securing +6 points in the overall tournament, and claiming Gold Medal on her board alongside Soumya Swaminathan (B1).

"India’s dominance was palpable, and both the Open and Women’s teams demonstrated immense strength throughout the tournament," said Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE) President, Arkady Dvorkovich. "Congratulations to the Indian contingent for their incredible achievement in Chess Olympiad 2024!"

This monumental success is a testament to the dedication, perseverance, and sheer brilliance of India’s chess talent, solidifying their position as a top-ranked nation in the FIDE rankings.
