I’m here to wager some interest in a potential product for the 350z market. First, let me explain:
If you aren’t already aware, the 350z is notorious for having a terribly brittle and flimsy glove compartment in the center of the dashboard. This is especially prominent on the early 03-06 models before the facelift. So here’s the good news:
I’ve been working on a solution to the extremely common broken latch on the 350z’s flimsy cubby/glove box. I’ve spent well over a month redesigning and testing this ‘lil guy out and am here to prove to y’all that it works!
The problem with the original design is that it was made of what appears to be ABS plastic- and although ABS is sturdy and decently temperature and UV resistant- it’s still not the best. Over time the plastic breaks down from heat cycles and UV rays, and eventually you get that click of the plastic breaking and the dreaded feeling of knowing your glove compartment no longer works :/
Previously it had been standard to just buy a replacement compartment door assembly($150+ used or ~$250 new) that would eventually be plagued with the same fault. I experienced it too, as my original broke and I felt there was a better way to go about solving this.
I started by buying a brand new glove compartment from Nissan and figuring out what the little latch part looked like and how it functioned. After some time in CAD software and many 3D test prints with PLA I found a modified design of the original that worked. It latches and opens smoothly as videoed above.
As mentioned above, ABS has flaws, so I’ve settled on ASA, which is similar but has a higher UV resistance and heat resistance meaning it won’t fail the same way ABS does. The only issue with ASA (and the 3d printing method) is that the parts will not turn out perfectly and will require some cleanup before they can be installed.
Now here’s where I need YOUR input.
Some questions for you guys:
– Would you rather receive a perfect looking part and pay more for the product, or receive something that needs a little DIY and costs less?
-How much of a desire do you have for this product?
-Is it worth spending time and money to install this yourself, or would you rather pay to replace the whole glove compartment?
-Would you prefer to purchase a printable 3d model and make it yourself (if you have a printer)?
-What questions do you have about this concept?
The plan currently is to continue testing until the product quality is good enough so that there is minimal cleanup of excess plastic before it can be installed, and to have online instructions on how to replace the broken part. Shooting for between $10-$20 USD for a quality product.
Thank you for your time reading this and awaiting your responses!

Great work so far op!
No one will buy a product that needs to be cleaned up, and you might receive bad reviews for people that don’t clean it up properly. Definitely make it a finished part of
That’s a great project, I also agree with the other commenter that you will likely have to sell a finished product over a diy product
would a resin print instead of sla mean less support material? does organic supports when slicing give a cleaner print? Looks great by the way mate 🙂
This is awesome! I agree with the others, I think finished product is the way to go.
Care to share the story I would like to try it out
