I am looking for some unbiased opinion. I married and moved from my country to the US. I legally applied for permanent residency and have been waiting for a response for several months now. Today, I got response that I was approved, so I was really happy, shared the news with my husband who was thrilled, and tried sharing them with my parents. I excitedly called my mom and she freaked out at me for telling her news like this specially since she was expecting news from my nephew's follow up appointment with the neurologist. He was going in as a follow up, he is taking medication to prevent seizures, and has been stable with no new known episodes since he was first diagnosed about 3 years ago. I had spoken to her this morning about it, and she was calm and said the appointment would go well and that the worst thing that could happen was that the doctor would say to prolong the medication, so I really don't understand why me calling excited to share my news before she heard from my nephew's follow up appointment would be so upsetting to her. I said I was sorry and I hung up. Later on the today, I called my dad for an unrelated matter, he started going off as to how it was inappropriate for me to share my news excitedly with my mom when I very well knew she was expecting news from my nephew and that she thought that I was calling to give terrible news about my nephew when I started my call with, "mom, mom!" I told him to remember that our of the three siblings that we are, I usually am the one that least tries to freak her out with bad news. He said he knew that, but it still was inappropriate. He kept on trying to "make things better" but I told him I didn't want to talk at the moment because I was really upset and I didn't want to say anything out of anger or that I would regret later on. I don't understand also why I would be the one to try and give them bad news about my nephew since those news would come directly from my brother; besides, the very seldom times he has asked me to share something, I have never done so in an emotional way. I haven't shared my news with anyone else because now I feel like I am being an ah. My husband says I've done nothing wrong by sharing my news excitedly but I still can't help to feel like I did something wrong. AITH?

  1. You’re not an asshole for sharing your good news! You had a reason to be excited, and it’s not your fault your fam was waiting on news about your nephew. Your mom should’ve been happy for you too! It’s tough timing, but don’t let them make you feel bad about celebrating your wins. You deserve to be happy!
