  1. Tech Youtuber Marques Brownlee (also known as MKBHD) is being dragged on social media after [launching a wallpaper subscription service](https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/24/24253023/mkbhd-panels-wallpaper-app-response-criticism).

Yes, you read that right. For $12 a month (or the low price of $50 a year), you will have full access to an app that will let you download the wallpapers used in his product reviews as well as others curated by him and his team. If you don’t want to pay, you just need to watch ads to download wallpapers for free. He said that he launched the app after fans have asked him a lot on where he gets his wallpapers for product reviews.

Needless to say, fans are not happy especially when he tweeted [this](https://i.redd.it/5e0tdczlmwqd1.jpeg) this in 2016 about charging a product that used to be free. People have also noted that the app could potentially be a security risk as it’s asking for way too much permission to let you download wallpapers. Marques has said that they are working on fixing the security issue. Someone actually managed to trace the database where the wallpapers are saved and made it free online after noticing its security flaws. Marques also earned the ire of even more fans after saying that artists are allowed to incorporate AI in their works which defeats the purpose of supporting artists.

For comparison, Wallpaper Engine is a similar program on Steam with a one-time payment of $4 to access their entire library for both PC and Android. Websites such as Unsplash allow you to access high quality royalty free photos for free. There are also artists on ko-fi you can directly support whose works you can purchase one-time.
