KNICKS SHOCK THE NBA WORLD: WHY THEY TRADED FOR KAT

In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves throughout the NBA, the New York Knicks have traded for Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns, also known as KAT. The deal, which was confirmed by multiple sources, has left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads, wondering what prompted the Knicks to make such a bold move.

WHAT LED TO THE TRADE?

According to sources close to the situation, the Knicks’ front office was determined to make a splash this offseason and bring in a dominant big man to pair with their young core of guards. With Towns entering the final year of his contract and the Timberwolves struggling to make a deep playoff run, the Knicks saw an opportunity to pry him away from Minnesota.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE KNICKS?

The addition of Towns gives the Knicks a legitimate superstar to build around, and instantly makes them a contender in the Eastern Conference. The 27-year-old center is a dominant force on the court, averaging 24.4 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game last season.

WHAT ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES?

The trade leaves the Timberwolves with a significant hole in their frontcourt, but they are expected to receive a package of young players and draft picks in return. The team is still in the process of evaluating their options, but sources indicate that they are willing to listen to offers for other key players.

REACTION FROM AROUND THE NBA

  • "KAT is a game-changer for the Knicks. He’s the missing piece they needed to take them to the next level." – NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal
  • "The Timberwolves are rebuilding, and this trade is a necessary step towards doing so. They’ll be back to competing soon." – NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski

Way too many posts talking about the toxic and injury-prone nature of KAT, so thought I'd give this a try at explaining why we did this.

Julius Randle

Was Julius Randle a Top-25 player with the Knicks? Yes. Absolutely

But, Randle was up for a contract extension that the Knicks didn't want to give him. Since he already took a pay cut earlier, highly doubt he would be willing to do it this time too (could be wrong). Let's dive into the numbers now, shall we?

The biggest issue with Randle was his injuries come the playoffs. As a result, his 2 playoff appearances on the Knicks have been abysmal. He shoots 34.4/28.3/75.6 splits from the field over 15 games. That's not a small sample size. Additionally, he has had only 1 good season as a 3-point shooter in the league. He's not highly efficient with a 50.9 effective field goal percentage.

Randle's a below-average defender too. Any average metric will tell you that. But, despite all this, Randle will be missed. He was the heart and soul of this team, and a key cog into getting us back into relevance.

Donte DiVincenzo

Elite role player. One of the best 3-pt shooters in the league for his volume, Divo did everything for the Knicks last season. He's on a cheap contract. Better defender than Randle, and can do a bit of everything when need be. 2nd-best scorer on the Knicks for almost 3-4 months.

This, in my opinion, is a guy we should have tried to keep. Divo acts as a salary filler in this deal. The Knicks had nobody in his range except Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson. He will be missed.

Karl-Anthony Towns

I don't like the contract. Flat out. I think its way too much money for a guy of his caliber, but if we were going to take a big swing, it would have been at center. Is he soft? Yes. Is he a great teammate? No.

But, there are huge positives to this deal. KAT's an elite 3-point shooter. Better than Divo. He'll play second-fiddle in an offensive system where he doesn't have to do too much, and we're adding a legitimate center (sorely needed after Mitch Rob news).

Is he a great playoff performer? No. But, numbers-wise, he is way better than Randle. Yes his 3pt dips, but unlike the Wolves who didn't have many floor spacers, the Knicks have enough guys who can shoot the 3, spreading defenses thinner.

Conclusion

Is it a great trade? No. But, we are definitely better than before, and it seems like the FO was preparing for this. We added so many guards in the offseason, and it mitigates the loss of Divo to some extent. KAT can supplement Randle as the 4 when Mitch comes back, but will start the season at the 5. Adding KAT also helps us load manage Mitch a lot, so that he's healthy when needed.
I think we won the trade. Thoughts? Comments?
