Feeling Bummed Out? You’re Not Alone: Mental Health Experts Sound the Alarm on Rising Tide of Depression
[Updated: 3:00 PM EST, March 12, 2023]
In a shocking development, mental health experts have sounded the alarm on the alarming rise of depression among young adults, with new data revealing a staggering increase in cases of bummed-out individuals worldwide.
The latest statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that nearly 25% of the global population is experiencing symptoms of depression, with the majority being young adults aged 18-35. This figure represents a 50% increase from just five years ago, sparking widespread concerns about the mental health epidemic.
"We’re seeing an unprecedented surge in cases of depression, and it’s not just limited to teenagers," said Dr. Emily Chen, a leading psychiatrist at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). "Young adults are struggling to cope with the pressures of modern life, and it’s taking a devastating toll on their mental health."
The roots of the problem are complex and multifaceted, experts say. Social media, in particular, is being blamed for exacerbating feelings of loneliness, low self-esteem, and social isolation.
"Social media has become a breeding ground for negative self-talk and comparison," said Dr. Chen. "Young people are constantly bombarded with curated images of others’ seemingly perfect lives, leaving them feeling inadequate and unsure of their own worth."
Other factors contributing to the rise in depression include increasing stress levels, lack of sleep, and the prevalence of anxiety disorders.
In response to the crisis, mental health organizations are rallying together to provide support services and resources to those in need.
"We’re witnessing a mental health emergency of epic proportions," said Emma Stone, CEO of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). "It’s imperative that we come together as a society to address this crisis and provide a safety net for those struggling."
To combat the growing epidemic of depression, experts recommend engaging in regular exercise, practicing mindfulness, and seeking support from loved ones or a mental health professional.
"If you’re feeling bummed out, know that you’re not alone," said Dr. Chen. "There is hope, and there is help available. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for support."

Just found out today that my insurance won’t cover any of my treatments. I know I don’t have fertility coverage, but I had just assumed they would bill my insurance for the bloodwork, ultrasounds, and meds and I’d pay what they didn’t cover. Well turns out they don’t bill my insurance and for an oral timed intercourse cycle it’s close to $1000 up front. I’m just really bummed out and not sure what else there is for me to do. We can’t afford it right now as we just bought a house a few months ago, so we’re building back our savings. My only issue is not ovulating on my own. After losing 100lbs, trying every supplement I’m recommended, getting my blood work within normal range still nothing is working. I just needed meds, but now I can’t continue treatment until beginning of next year when we get our savings back up. I’m just so sad, it feels like bad news after bad news. I don’t even have any family or friends to confide in and have a shoulder to cry on because they are the types that say “it will happen when the time is right”, or the best one “just stop trying and it will happen”. I have my husband and he’s supportive of course, but I wish I had a friend that also could share my struggles. It’s like the universe is playing a sick joke on me.
