Wildfire Singes Progress on Jasper National Park Captive Caribou Breeding Program
A devastating wildfire in Jasper National Park has dealt a significant setback to the park’s long-running captive caribou breeding program. The inferno, which has ravaged over 12,000 hectares of land, has destroyed several enclosures and habitats used to rehabilitate endangered caribou.
The Jasper National Park captive caribou breeding program, which has been operational since 1979, has been a crucial part of conservation efforts to revive the dwindling caribou population in the park. The program has achieved significant success in the past, with over 20 calves born to captive bred females.
However, the recent wildfire has left the program’s future uncertain. "The fire has devastated our enclosures and habitat, and we’re concerned about the impact it may have on our breeding program," said a park official. "We’re currently assessing the damage and trying to determine the best course of action to ensure the safety and well-being of our caribou herd."
The wildfire, which is still not fully contained, has also forced the evacuation of several staff and volunteers from the park.
