RTÉ News: Maximum Sentences for Knife-Related Offences Increased in England

In a significant move to tackle the growing concern of knife-related crimes, the UK government has announced a major overhaul of sentencing laws for England and Wales. As of today, the maximum sentence for knife-related offences has been increased to 12 years in prison, up from the previous maximum of 10 years.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Justice, the new sentencing guidelines aim to "tackle the scourge of knife crime" and "keep communities safe." The changes will apply to all knife-related offences, including possession, possession with intent to supply, and using a knife to commit an offence.

The increased maximum sentence is part of a broader package of measures aimed at tackling knife crime, which has been on the rise in recent years. The government has also announced plans to increase funding for community programs and initiatives aimed at preventing youth violence and supporting victims of knife crime.

The new sentencing guidelines have been welcomed by campaigners and community leaders, who have long called for tougher penalties for those involved in knife crime. "This is a major step forward in our efforts to tackle knife crime and keep our communities safe," said a spokesperson for the charity, Knife Free. "We urge the government to continue to prioritize this issue and work with communities to prevent youth violence."
