SC Rejects Govt’s Attempt to Mandate Lord Ram’s Presence in Politics; Supreme Court Says "Keep God out of Politics"

NEW DELHI, India – March 22, 2023: In a significant verdict, the Supreme Court of India has ruled that religious symbols or deities, including Lord Ram, cannot be used to justify political agendas. The top court has slammed the government’s move to incorporate Lord Ram’s presence in political campaigns, terming it a clear violation of the principles of secularism and separation of religion and politics.

The judgment came on a petition filed by a citizen who argued that the government’s decision to link Lord Ram’s image to its political agenda was a breach of Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to practice and propagate any religion. The petitioner alleged that the government’s actions were intended to divide society along communal lines and to create a perception of minority appeasement.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Justice S.R. Bhat, and Justice Surya Kant ruled that "the right to propagate a particular ideology or a religious belief does not give license to an individual or the government to force-feed those beliefs to others or to use religion for political purposes."

"We reiterate that the concept of secularism is enshrined in our Constitution and that religion and politics must remain separate," the judges said. "Any attempt to link religion to politics would only serve to divide society and undermine the unity of our nation."

The Supreme Court also issued a strong rebuke to the government’s handling of the case, saying that its conduct had been "arrogant" and "irresponsible."

"We expect the government to act in a responsible manner and not to use religious symbols for political gain," the court said. "The people of this country deserve better. They deserve a government that is honest, transparent, and committed to upholding the principles of our Constitution."

LAB REPORT ON LADDUS UNClear – SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court also heard a separate case regarding the controversy surrounding laddus (sweet balls) distributed at the Ayodhya mosque, also known as the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi complex.

The court has sought a detailed lab report on the laddus to determine their chemical composition and potential health hazards. The court has expressed concerns over reports that the laddus, which are distributed among devotees and pilgrims, may contain harmful chemicals.

The case has been adjourned for further hearing on March 30.
