When is Winter Exactly? The Answer May Surprise You!
As the seasons change and the weather starts to get colder, many of us are left wondering when winter officially begins. Is it December 21st, the winter solstice? Or is it something else entirely?
According to the National Weather Service, winter officially begins on December 1st and ends on February 28th (or February 29th in leap years). But what about the winter solstice, which typically falls on December 21st or 22nd? Is that the start of winter too?
The answer lies in the way we define the seasons. The National Weather Service uses a system called the "meteorological seasons," which divides the year into four seasons based on temperature and precipitation patterns. According to this system, winter begins on December 1st and ends on February 28th.
But what about the astronomical seasons, which are based on the Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun? The winter solstice, which typically falls on December 21st or 22nd, marks the shortest day of the year and the beginning of the astronomical winter.
So, when is winter exactly? The answer is that it depends on how you define it. If you’re talking about the meteorological season, winter begins on December 1st and ends on February 28th. But if you’re talking about the astronomical season, winter begins on the winter solstice and ends on the vernal equinox, which typically falls on March 20th or 21st.

I hear of people waking up to the 50's but meanwhile it's still an oven in Florida. I'm starting to forget what it's like to have cold weather or the last time we had it for 2 weeks.

In my experience Florida winter is usually Jan 13 and second winter is Feb 20. And if my avocado starts trying to set fruit, 3rd winter march 19.
Last week of January.
February 25th is the start and February 28th ends winter.
That’s the best part, it doesn’t come. We might get a decent breeze and a light frost. But nothing you can call “winter”
It starts with “the false hope” which is typically a week in October/November. This is when the first northern cold front comes through. But then it’s hot all over again.
Then you get the “but it’s all I wanted for Christmas” where there’s another cold front in December but it’s almost never Christmas week.
We wrap it up with”Diet Winter” which is typically January – Beginning of March. With maybe a week or two of actual Winter somewhere in there.
When I was little in the 1990s, it used start dropping around this time or in mid October. Climate has changed. Now it doesn’t start dropping until late December.
I don’t know about Winter but I know we get 3 days of fall in February.
Sometime early next year
