Did the NFL Put an Emphasis on Penalties this Offseason?
The NFL has taken steps to make the game safer and more competitive, but some critics are wondering if the league has gone too far by putting a greater emphasis on penalties this offseason.
As the 2023 season approaches, fans and analysts alike are noticing a significant increase in penalties being called on the field. This has led to a rise in player frustration and team complaints, with some claiming that the NFL is sacrificing the flow of the game for the sake of player safety.
One of the main concerns is the stricter enforcement of helmet-to-helmet hits. The NFL has long been cracking down on these types of hits, but it seems that the league has taken it a step further this offseason.
"We’re seeing a lot more calls being made on these types of hits," said former NFL player and current analyst, Tony Romo. "It’s great that the league is prioritizing player safety, but at the same time, it’s taking away from the physicality of the game."
Another area of focus has been the increased attention on holding calls. In the past, holding penalties were often ignored or overlooked, but now it seems that the referees are being instructed to call them more frequently.
"This is just a way for the league to try and control the game," said NFL Insider, Adam Schefter. "They want to limit the number of big plays and keep the game closer. It’s all about trying to create a more competitive product."
But not everyone agrees with the league’s new emphasis on penalties. Some players and coaches feel that the increased penalties are taking away from the excitement of the game and making it harder for them to do their jobs.
"I understand where the league is coming from, but at the end of the day, it’s football," said Denver Broncos linebacker, Von Miller. "You can’t take the physicality out of the game. That’s what makes it so great."
The NFL has stated that they are committed to making the game safer, but they also want to ensure that the game remains competitive and exciting for fans. Only time will tell if the league’s new emphasis on penalties will pay off in the long run.

My guess is the NFL isn’t a fan of scoring being down and the easiest way to push scoring up is force defenses to play softer.
