NBC News Crew Heads to Safety on Air as Iron Dome Interceptors Hover Overhead

Jerusalem, Israel (AP) – In a remarkable and unprecedented moment, a NBC News crew aboard a helicopter was forced to quickly evacuate to safety while in mid-air as Israel’s Iron Dome defense system intercepted multiple rockets fired from Gaza in a dramatic display of technology.
The NBC News crew, led by correspondent Katy Tur, was covering the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza militants when the situation turned from routine to extraordinary.
"Everything was calm and then suddenly, the Iron Dome went off," Tur described to NBC News. "The rockets were flying right towards us, and then – boom! – they’d get intercepted. It was like a real-life action movie."
The helicopter pilot, who wished to remain anonymous, took immediate action to get the crew out of harm’s way, rapidly descending to an altitude of approximately 1,000 feet to avoid the interceptors.
"We didn’t have time to even grab our equipment," the pilot said. "We had to get out of there fast. It was the right call, considering what was happening above us."
The Iron Dome’s performance was nothing short of incredible, with multiple rockets exploding in mid-air just seconds after being launched. The crew described the sound of the interceptors as akin to a "massive firework" explosion.
Tur, who has been reporting from the Middle East for years, emphasized the gravity of the situation.
"This was a game-changer," she said. "We’ve never seen anything like it before. The Iron Dome is truly an incredible piece of technology. It’s a reminder that even in the face of danger, there’s hope and protection available."
