NORTH SIOUX CITY (KELO) — A railroad bridge crossing the Big Sioux River collapsed Sunday night.
“It’s surreal. It’s crazy seeing what the water can do, especially taking a bridge out. It’s sad. Hopefully it holds up and it doesn’t give and continue on down the river,” Sioux City, Iowa resident Dan Engel said.
North Sioux City Police say the bridge collapsed around 11 Sunday night. Several people wanted to see the aftermath for themselves. For some, it brought back memories from 2011.
“2011 was when the Missouri flooded and it’s still getting about that height now, but that it’s not covering some of the buildings that it did in 2011. But the Big Sioux wasn’t quite this full either. And I don’t think they had a railroad bridge go out 13 years ago. So, this is something unique as far as ripping out a bridge,” Sioux City, Iowa resident Timm Funk said.
The water levels are still impacting thousands.
“I do know a lot of people, so I’ve reached out to them, see if they need help. And right now it’s to the point where there’s not really much you can do other than wait for the water to go down. And then you can start rebuilding and coming in there, getting whatever you need,” Engel said.
Union County Emergency Management says some of the bridge’s trusses collapsed, causing the bridge to partially fall.
