Former Stand News Editor Arrives at Court Ahead of Verdict in Sedition Trial

HONG KONG – The former editor of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy news outlet Stand News, Chung Pui-kuen, arrived at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday morning ahead of the verdict in his sedition trial.

Chung, 51, is accused of conspiring to publish seditious materials on Stand News, which was shut down by the authorities in December 2021. The trial began in October 2022, and the verdict is expected to be delivered later on Tuesday.

The prosecution alleges that Chung and other Stand News staff members collaborated to publish articles that were intended to overthrow the government and undermine national security. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Chung’s defense team has argued that the charges are an attack on press freedom and that the articles in question were legitimate journalistic endeavors.

The sedition trial has raised concerns about the erosion of press freedom in Hong Kong, which was guaranteed under the city’s mini-constitution, the Basic Law. The National Security Law (NSL), imposed by Beijing in 2020, has been used to crack down on dissent and silence critics of the government.
