Missouri Driver’s License Gender Marker Change Requires Court Order or SRS, Leaving Many Transgender Individuals Stranded

In a shocking development, the Missouri Department of Revenue has announced that effective immediately, transgender individuals seeking to update their gender marker on their driver’s license will require a court order or documentation of gender confirmation surgery (SRS) in order to make the change.

This draconian measure has left many in the transgender community reeling, feeling betrayed by their state government and concerned for their safety and privacy.

Background

For months, transgender individuals in Missouri have been waiting for the state to follow suit with other states that have adopted more inclusive policies regarding gender marker changes on driver’s licenses. Instead, the Missouri Department of Revenue has opted to impose a strict, burdensome process that will make it virtually impossible for many transgender individuals to make the change.

Impact

The new policy is expected to disproportionately affect transgender individuals, many of whom may not have access to court orders or SRS. This decision will not only cause confusion and inconvenience for those affected but also put their lives in danger, as they may be forced to present their "incorrect" gender identity on official documents.

Reaction

"I am appalled and disheartened by this decision," said Emily, a transgender individual living in Missouri. "I have already experienced harassment and discrimination due to my gender identity, and this policy change will only exacerbate the situation. I am deeply concerned for my safety and the safety of my fellow transgender individuals in this state."

Call to Action

Transgender individuals and allies in Missouri are calling on state lawmakers to revisit this policy and adopt a more inclusive, compassionate approach to gender marker changes on driver’s licenses.

In Missouri to update the gender marker on your drivers license you would only need a signature from your medical provider (i.e. endocrinologist or therapist) on form 5532 and taken to the DMV. I had printed this form and sent it to my endo on Monday and she filled it out and I took it to the DMV today on Friday and was told it was no longer valid and the law had "just" changed to require a court order or proof of SRS. I can't find any news on this law/policy change other than the link to the form on the Missouri Department of Revenue's website now being dead.

Funnily enough the DMV clerk was very confused by the male marker on my ID I was renewing until I gave her the form.
